frustration
This week has been very frustrating, although I think most of that is past now. Half of it was work, where I have been working on the same equipment upgrade for two months now. It has gone so much slower than I thought it would, with problems continually coming up... always realizing that I needed to order one more thing than I thought I would, getting to the next step and finding that I needed to do some small machining, then more extra parts, then more machining, then bad threads that break the ceramic I silver soldered to and having to do more machining and redo stuff I had already done... early in the week I had nearly had it. But I managed to push really hard and finally finish everything, which feels great, and put my cryostat back together and back under vacuum where it is right now, outgassing all the crap that has accumulated over the last two months. Finally. Soon there will be experiments again, and that will feel good. In some ways, the part of an experiment where you are building stuff is the most fun, because you have a lot of freedom, and you are using cool things like a torch or the machine shop. And you are making something, like playing with legos or lincoln logs except that it's something really useful, that you made! But a lot of things always break or don't work how you thought they would, and there are always delays, and if you are a scientist and you need the thing you built to work in order to even start with the science then it feels like a huge time sink going nowhere. It's a mixed bag, I guess, and at this point I am relieved to have finished. The other half was my knee, which is still giving me problems. I went on a 9-mile hike last Sunday, which in retrospect maybe wasn't the best idea with sporadic knee pain, but the result was that all week my knee has been achy when I get up to walk around, or when I bend it too much. I made a sports medicine appointment for Monday, but I'm just annoyed with the whole thing and very antsy to exercise. It didn't help reading Born to Run and the new Runner's World issue and reading a friend's family's ultra report from a 100 mile race. Today my knee was actually a little better, though, which is something. It goes without saying that I haven't worked out since that hike and it's making me crazy, though with the issues at work it probably helped to have a few more hours to put in. Today was really nice, though. I got a lot of sleep and we made omelettes this morning, then went to Trader Joe's followed by a comic book store (Ben and his officemates are starting a roleplaying campaign which I think I am invited to) and a homebrew store (we have cider and whitbeer bottled and are looking to start an IPA). Then we went to the Italian Market for a variety of things, including delicious cheap salmon that we just ate for dinner, and since then I've been at home cooking and talking to Steph on the phone. This is the best Saturday I've had in awhile... I don't know why but recently I started to dread weekends, feeling restless I guess, but today was really nice. |

VIDEO: MOVIES: REVIEW: G.I. Joe: Rise Of The Cobra (2009) http://clintjcl.wordpress.com/2009/11/07/video-movies-review-g-i-joe-rise-of-the-cobra-2009/ http://clintjcl.wordpress.com/?p=3782 [IMDB link] [Netflix link]
UNCOMFORTABLE PLOT SUMMARY (inspired by this): [highlight for spoilers]→ Soldier fails to save lover’s brother, leaves lover, causing nanotechnology to lead to complications.
PEOPLE: Directed by Stephen Sommers (Van Helsing, The Mummy, Catch Me If You Can). With Dennis Quaid, Sienna Miller (Camille, Stardust). And even a brief scene with Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Tommy from 3rd Rock From The Sun)
QUIRKS: Based on the 1980s cartoon. Lots and lots and lots of action. No parachutes coming out of the exploded planes anymore! Grey goo scenario!
VISUALS: Excellent futuristic military battles! Over 250 explosions!
BAD STUFF: I was a bit confused about various aspects, as I have no recollection of the characters in the original series. But that didn’t thwart my enjoyment.
CONCLUSION: Wow. Lots of action. Looks great in HD. I don’t remember the original cartoon much, but it was nice that people actually died this time. This is about what I expected, and I felt like they didn’t really mess up. I don’t know what everyone else was whining about. I think people just hate adaptations/remakes because it never feels like watching the original as a kid did. But that’s because that part of you IS DEAD. MUAHAHA!!
RATINGS:
Clint: Netflix: 4/5 stars. IMDB: 8/10.
Carolyn: Netflix: 4/5 stars. IMDB: 7.5/10.
The native public rating for this movie is Netflix: 3.7/5 stars (3.6/5 stars for people who rate like me), IMDB 5.9/10.
RECOMMENDATION: If you can put aside your high standards and watch this as an optimist and not a pessimist, then it’s a nice way to see a high-budget, more-realistic interpretation of the low-budget 1980’s cartoon we all knew and loved.
SIMILAR MOVIES: Transformers is at similar in the sense that it is a military themed 1980s-cartoon remake.
COINCIDENCES:
#1) (Camille, G.I. Joe:Rise Of The Cobra) 2 movies within a month or so with Seinna Miller having multiple hair colors and getting married/accepting a marriage proposal.
#2) (Transformers:Revenge Of The Fallen, G.I. Joe:Rise Of The Cobra) 2 military-themed movies in the same week that had shots with 3 / 6 pyramids with sub-movie-titles of Revenge/Rise Of The [bad guy].
#3) (G.I. Joe:Rise Of The Cobra, Escape From L.A.) 2 military-themed movies 2 nights in a row that had government representatives who holographically projected themselves.
FRIENDS’ RATINGS: James O thought “Not as bad as I thought. Although, this is if I try to think of the movie through the eyes of a child.” Cindy Lee thought it was okay. Marc N said: “you will like it so long as you go in knowing it is a cool gadget and explosion kind of movie and not some epic story.”

Hey short people!
Where do you take your pants to be hemmed? I just bought a bunch of new pants, all of which are too long for me, as even the shortest pants are too long for my stumpy legs. There's a tailor down the street from me, but they charge $12 per pair. I just can't justify spending that much when the pants only cost me $15 each. I live near PGE Park but would gladly truck my trousers just about anywhere in town if they do a nice job at a decent price. Suggestions/recommendations? |

No idea what moving van any of these dudes used to carry their balls around in. The 7 Most Badass Last Stands in History, from our friends at Cracked.com. "Unable to stand and bleeding like a poorly wrapped package from the butcher shop, Agis got to his knees, gripped his blades and proceeded to hamstring enough charging enemy troops to buy his army time to withdrawal. The Macedonians backed off slowly, presumably because they'd just gotten owned by one dude on his knees. Realizing they didn't want to get anywhere near his swords, someone chucked a javelin through his torso, probably catching at least a bit of his enormous balls in the process." Agis III of Sparta is number seven. That means there's six dudes even ballsier and nut-fuck crazier than HE was. |

Olive Oil
Hi, I now volunteer at a church food drive and sometimes I get to take home a box for helping. Most of it is stuff I won't eat but I came across a nice brand of Olive Oil that I would definitly use but...it expired in 2008. It's never been opened and it looks clear, nothing cloudy inside...still looks like Olive Oil. Safe to use for cooking? |
